RE: Worried!
Depends on the manufacturer. Somewhere I have an official Sony data sheet for the VTC4s. When I find it, I'll post it.

The reason I'm not happy about using pulse ratings is the allied concept of duty cycle. It may be that the pulse rating is for 5 seconds in any hour. Or 5 seconds in each fifteen minutes. Neither are suitable for vaping.

Here's the page on discharge currents from the VTC4 data sheet. I don't have time just now to go through all 16 pages of this for the duty cycle, but will later on.

Something I'd never taken into consideration.

16 pages on one battery.. I could barely write that about my whole day. Lol.

Cool reply, thanks

RE: Worried!
Annoyed with myself - I accidentally saved the 1 page version I made over the original. Now to see if Google can come to the rescue.

They can!

You can grab a copy from here (My Dropbox)

RE: Worried!
That's not actually the one and it is a very early version. I've no idea why the version I had managed to corrupt itself - and not just on Dropbox but the original too.

If you Google for US18650VTC4 SPEC you should find it.

RE: Worried!
Worked perfectly Smile

I can't see listed any information about time scale between single 'pulse' discharges during testing.

So i thought, how about when it'll go thermal runaway.. there is reference to the cell temperature/time at a 10a discharge(from memory) and there's an optimum discharge temp listed, but I cant figure a coefficient between discharge rate and temp gain from that. no time/temp for a higher discharge rates or even 'pulse' . I don't know how quickly it overheats.

I can see how there are so many bogus claims of amperage.. its a better man than me understands that data I can tell you that!

This is where I get called out for being blind.. did I miss/overlook something vital?

RE: Worried!
This document is aimed at pack builders, Sony do not regard their 18650 cells as consumer items at all and do what they can to discourage such sales. The product liability issues are just too risky.

I believe Sony actually wants to sell off their battery business altogether.

I think the reason there isn't duty cycle info given is that the pack is required to have fuses or other shutoff devices that will require manual intervention to reset. Hence all the stuff about cutoff temperatures. At a guess, and this is just a guess it'll take a few minutes for the cell to cool off. I can stick a thermocouple to the outside of a cell and give it some heavy use to see what happens. That means trying to get the Linux drivers for my meter's USB connection to work - the ones I have only work on ancient versions of Red Hat Linux.

And don't work at all in virtual machines.

RE: Worried!
The fact you even have a thermocouple is cool as f**k!
If you dont mind me asking, this a hobby or profession for you?

Yeah, I noticed the references to packs, cutoff's etc, kinda throws you off the scent a bit. It made me wonder if the c rating wasnt actually allied to the fact, then the question arises; are they even safe at all!?
