Wildlife in your area.
Hi Guys - I thought it would be quite interesting to hear about commonly seen wildlife where you live. We are from so many different places there must be quite a variation.
I live on the fringes of a large country park so I am quite fortunate in having a lot of wildlife all around. Some of the common birds I have already seen today are:- Jackdaws, Crows, Magpies, a Wren, Blackbird and a Songthrush and quite a variety of gulls. No raptors so far today but I commonly see Sparrowhawks, Kestrels and Buzzards and the odd Barn Owl. We have Rabbits, Red Deer, Badgers and Grey Squirrels. How about the rest of you - please join in.

We have foxes, shitehawks and assorted other birds. Since the foxes moved into town a few years ago we see far fewer squirrels (grey ones, AFAIK there are no reds left in town) and rabbits.

Can't remember seeing a bunny in the last couple of years in town.

There are 5 varieties of shitehawk, several of them are actually endangered species, the Common Gull (Which is very far from common) for one.

RE: Wildlife in your area.
Oh, the usual North American fodder... copperheads, deer, foxes, turkeys, occasional eagles, rabbits, bats, owls, possums, skunks, raccoons, even an armadillo or two. Woodpeckers, cardinals, sparrows, bluebirds, orioles, assorted flying fauna. This is seen at my property, not just 'in the area' that I live because that's cheating. All these things generally conspire to make a mess of things.

Before I finished the basement, I once found a family of copperheads making a nice home under a tarp I had tossed into the corner. I did not kill it but I did evict it.

Round the cottage is far more interesting.

Very few foxes. If a fox is spotted, it'll be shot in under 24 hours. Far too many rabbits though as a result.

Roe deer are common, red deer rather rare but I saw one in October - first in 40 years.

Lots of raptors, buzzards, eagles, ospreys. The odd hawk. Red tailed hawks are the most "common".

Lots of finches, blue tits, cuckoos and woodpeckers. Occasionally swifts. Thrushes, jays, magpies, sparrows, owls of a few flavours, blackbirds, crows (Which the farmers and gamekeepers hate) and the very occasional rook or raven.

And shitehawks of course.

RE: Wildlife in your area.
I want to take this opportunity to apologise to our forum members who - it has to be said - behave impeccably throughout the year, for the poor behaviour of a senior member of staff - this is totally beyond the control of other staff members especially when it is encouraged by another senior staff member. Time -outs do not work - in fact they seem to be taken as a badge of honour. Any ideas from the great members here as to what to do.
