What's your Vaping story?
Why did you start vaping?
How long have you been a vaper?
Are you a smoker, an ex-smoker or a non smoker?
How has vaping effected you?

Tell your story!

Add it to the thread and it will  be added to a growing body of stories from across the world in many languages and from every continent. Plans are afoot to create a database where every story can be found. Your story will be included in this database. Our vaping stories are some of the most powerful weapons we have when it comes to convincing politicians, medical professionals and the general public about how effective vaping can be.

If you are happy to leave your real name and which town you live in that  would be fantastic. It would help make sure these stories cannot be ignored by the sceptics, but the important thing is your story, so if you aren’t able to leave your name, PLEASE still leave your story.

RE: What's your Vaping story?
I started smoking in college. I had some friends who smoked, and I was dealing with a lot of stress from family and teachers, and I had been struggling with depression for years even before college, so when someone offered me a cigarette, of course I took it. I found smoking to be very relaxing, and I loved taking long walks around the area surrounding my dorm and smoking to unwind from a long day. Before too long, I became a pack-a-day smoker and I loved it. I didn't care what health effects it might have later, because I honestly didn't think I'd make it past 30 years old anyway due to my depression.
I started vaping because it was convenient. I went to a private Christian college and smoking was banned on campus, so vaping allowed me to get a nicotine fix without having to walk away from the dorm. My best friend had been a smoker and switched to vaping because it was healthier, and he let me try his ecig when he visited me on campus. I loved it and quickly bought my own.
I started out with an eGo starter kit, but it wasn't enough to make me quit. I eventually upgraded my ecig, and found myself smoking less and less. I wasn't trying to quit, I just liked vaping more than smoking.
I started researching ecigs, trying to figure out how to get the best vape, and along the way I learned a lot about the health benefits of quitting smoking, and so I decided to completely switch. Once I made that decision, I found it incredibly easy to quit smoking because I had already been vaping for months and gradually tapering off without even trying.
I never had lung cancer or anything like that. The only health problem I had from smoking was shortness of breath and I can't sing as well as I used to. I'm fortunate to have quit within just a few years of starting so I don't have a 40-year habit to overcome. Still, the change was noticeable. Now that I've switched from smoking to vaping, I can play with my nephews without getting out of breath, and I don't feel like dying when I exercise. Vaping saved me from continuing smoking, and for that I'm extremely grateful. I've also met some great people through The Vaping Forum and in vape shops, and I've become more involved in politics as I learned how vaping is being mistreated in government and media. I want to share my story so that other college kids might decide to make the smart decision and quit smoking before you do irreparable damage.

Michael, from Chattanooga, TN

(I don't want to give my full name, because my family are all very conservative and I don't want to risk them potentially finding out that I vape. You can have my full name once I've moved out of my parents' house.)

RE: What's your Vaping story?
i started smoking when i was 13. back in 84 this was common ,and most gave little notice to teens smoking .
in my mid 20's i noticed that shortness of breath was holding me back and decided to work on quiting .
first i tried lites hoping to gradually break away , no dice . i tried cold turky , that was a wash. then the patch wich led to eating nonstop and i still wanted to smoke , tried the gum , tried a pipe ( liked that . tried cigars hoping if smoking was unpleasant id quit, nope there are snom nice cigars out there.
eventualy i found the cig-alike , this helped alot . over a couple monthe i managed to quit cigs and moved on to an ego mod . .
i have been smoke free for about 7 months now and have no desire to smoke . i continue to reduce my nic levell , but i find vape to be satisfying and will probably continue to vape even when nicotine is at 0mg

RE: What's your Vaping story?
I smoked fairly regularly for the better part of the last 20 years. I always wanted to quit, knowing full well the health risks, but never really found the motivation. Of course I had the requisite shortness of breath, etc but have luckily never been afflicted with any serious illness from the smoking.

Well, quite unintentionally, 53 days ago I bought a Tesla starter kit and two bottles of juice basically on a whim. I was in a non-smoking room at the hotel, the key system was down so we needed an escort EVERY time we would have stepped out for a smoke, and I didn't have any on me anyway. So, off to the vape shop I went. 1 was flavored like cigarette tobacco, the other was a recommended dragon fruit juice. I was unimpressed with the tobacco flavored one, figuring it didn't taste very good (funny, though, because cigarettes actually taste nasty too). But when I switched over to the nice flavored juice, and still got to emulate the act of smoking complete with clouds, cigarettes were immediately gone from my life forever. I find this 1000x more enjoyable. The variations of styles, equipment, and flavors is just absolutely a no brainer compared to the one choice only deal with cigarettes. My health has improved, my senses are regaining, and I am loving this. Thank you vaping for giving me the vehicle I needed to quit those little killer sticks! And heck, thanks to this forum for being a great internet home for folks like me.

RE: What's your Vaping story?
I suppose that as I am asking for stories, I ought to tell you my own.

I started smoking at 14, and was an occasional smoker for the next few years, it was when I was 17 that I started smoking on a daily basis. I enjoyed smoking, I smoked for 24 years, and except for a couple of half hearted attempts to give up I smoked daily though not heavily. I liked the way it broke up my day and gave me those little rest breaks, chill out time to get my head together or to zone out. Each time I tried to quit (normally due to pressure from my then husband) I missed what smoking did for me, I found life far more stressful and I missed the effect nicotine had of making me more focussed in some way.
Now I am no idiot, I knew smoking was doing me harm, but I had pretty much resigned myself to dying from a smoking related disease, the benefits I gained outweighed the dangers I perceived (though this might have changed as I grew older).
I bought my first ecig for a laugh, I had no intention of quitting smoking, though I did think it might let me cut down a bit. I had heard of ecigs from a work colleague and my hairdresser, and thought little of it until I was passing a shop in a town centre that had a ego/CE4 and two juices for £10 advertised. It was cheap, and I thought it would be a giggle to try a few flavours. When I walked in the shop I thought the tobacco flavours would be where it was at, but I didn't like any of them, after a mammoth tasting session I walked out with Honeydew Melon and Cherry flavour and still had zero intention of quitting smoking.
So I smoked when I wanted to smoke and vaped when I wanted to vape, and 10 days later I had my first smoke free day in 20 years. I just forgot to smoke, the vaping hit the spot so well, that I didn't even realise I hadn't had a cigarette until I reached for my tobacco at 11 o'clock at night and it was still where I had left it the previous evening.
I didn't quit smoking, I switched to an infinitely preferable way of enjoying my nicotine and my way of life. I have done the research, I know it is better for me, but if it didn't hit the spot that wouldn't really be relevant. I'm not a vaper because it is healthier or cheaper or smells less, though all of these are true. I am a vaper because it is better. As I write this I haven't had a cigarette for 15 months, and I don't see myself ever going back. It would be like throwing away my phone and going back to semaphore.

Great thread with some wonderful stories.. keep 'em coming folks! GoodPopcorm1

I'll sticky this thread as it's also a wonderful resource for those still unsure of whether to try an ecig or not.

RE: What's your Vaping story?
I am old - very old - but still alive. I smoked for over 50 years not heavily - about 5 packs a week. Over the last 10 years of my smoking life I tried to quit many times - I tried all available methods but I needed my friend nicotine so all methods failed dismally. Just about 2 years ago I was on the Amazon website looking at things in general and noticed ecigs for the first time. I then visited a great many sites reading up on all the things I could find and decided to give it a go - I had nothing to lose after all my attempts to stop.
I purchased an Ego starter kit and some virginia tobacco juice - it made me cough - but so did cigarettes when I started. I kept at it and soon got the hang of it but was still smoking cigarettes - I could not get the satisfaction I needed. I read more - learned that adjusting the power changed the taste until you found what you wanted so I bought a simple VV battery - it had 3 settings - high medium and low - very sophisticated. This was the start of a love affair - the difference was amazing. I soon moved on to my first 'mod' an Innokin MVP and after reading even more I bought a Nautilus Mini and some toffee juice which I mixed with the tobacco - I had arrived. I have not had a cigarette in over 18 months in that time vaping has become an extra hobby for me - the amount of 'stuff ' I have is rediculous but I love it. I have even started to sub ohm at times with the help of a sat. nav. so I know where I am going. I joined this brilliant forum in April and have learned a lot from the kind and patient folks here - no question is too rediculous for them and since joining I am enjoying vaping even more.
While writing this I have my Coolfire 4 with a Triton tank - enjoying every minute.

RE: What's your Vaping story?
My name is Robert Jenkins I live in Cardiff United Kingdom. I started smoking when I was 12 years old just to feel big amongst my peers. Looking back it wasn’t one of the better decisions I’ve made in my life. By the age of 14 years I was smoking 10 cigarettes a day by my mid 20s that number had risen to between 20-40 a day depending on what I was doing. I had tried to quit on many occasion over the years using remedies such as Nicotine Patches and Gum. The gum was of no use at all to me in my fight to quit. When I used patches I could go a few day without smoking until I went out for a drink at which point I would smoke while wearing a patch. I had more or less given up hope of ever quitting smoking.

But then one day in October 2013 I came across a video on YouTube about Electronic Cigarettes. A week or so later my wife and I were out shopping and we walked passed an electronic cigarette vendors stand in a shopping centre. The video I had seen came to mind so we stopped and had a chat to the young lady behind the counter. The price was £50 for a starter pack with 2 batteries 2 clearomizers a charger and some E juice. We walked away after chatting and went to a cafe. While sitting having a cuppa my wife said £50 is less than I would spend on cigarettes over the next week. We then returned to the vendor and I bought the starter pack.
At that time I had 10 cigarettes left in a pack so I decided I would finish those that night and start using the electronic cigarette the next day. At about 10am 1st November 2013 I filled the clearomizer with 24mg nicotine tobacco flavour e juice and took my first vape. That by far was the best decision I have made to date! I now vape mainly fruit and sweet flavours with 6mg nicotine. I am confident I will eventually be vaping 0mg nicotine.
Basically an Electronic Cigarette allowed me to quit smoking and the plus point to that is the fact that my health has improved ten fold. I can taste food properly I can run without being out of breath. Enough said !

Vaping Saves Lives. To vape is to advocate..

RE: What's your Vaping story?
Hi Diche:

Why did I start vaping?

Well, since I have no 'minor' vices (just major ones) it wasn't to stop smoking. It was simply because I became curious to know what vaping was about and thought that the best way of finding out was to try it.

How long have I been a vaper?

A couple of weeks.

Am I a smoker, an ex-smoker, or a non smoker?

I smoked a pipe for 20 years but gave it up many years ago.

How has vaping affected me?

I can once again enjoy kicking back, relaxing, and puffing out lovely flavorful swirling clouds of 'smoke', except that this 'smoke' doesn't get in my eyes and isn't going to transport me to a more spiritual dimension, one I'm in no hurry to get to as I suspect it may be rather hot.

Vaping has also led me to this great forum and has given me an interesting new hobby to enjoy by opening up the fascinating field of attys, atomizers, cartomizers, clearomizers, coils, cells, drip tips, mods, box mods, mech mods, regulated mods, unregulated mods, tanks, PVs, APVs, RBAs, RDAs, RDTAs, PG, VG, juices, flavors, etc., etc.*

To conclude, let me pirate a fine line from Spasmod by saying:

"Welcome to the joys of 'where the hell am I going to get this stuff from?'"

Smoke

* OK, I may as well admit it. I pirated the list from Michael's handy 'Vaping Glossary' at http://www.thevapingforum.com/Thread-Vaping-Glossary

Careful... he's packing two i134 Terminators. Scare

RE: What's your Vaping story?
I took up the fags just before I was 14. I smoked 17 a day till I went to work in Africa where it went up to 200 a week (circa 1984). Changed to low tar fags - went up to 40 a day. Went back to less low in tar stinkies as I smoked a lot less of them.

Spent the year 85-86 smoking homemade fags rolled up in the airmail Guardian with home made glue from rice boiled for a few hours. And local tobacco - high quality but very high tar too. Then Chinese stinkies appeared on the market - they had been far too long in a warehouse - when you lit one of these things, maggots would jump out of it.

Returned to the UK - back to 200 a week.

Went to work in a hospital (late 89). Where I still work.

Tried a 901 ecig - failed miserably. Got given an eGo-T. Failed to use it.

Took a 25% pay cut (Thank Fuck you very much NHS).

Could no longer afford to smoke.

Dug out the eGo.

Never entirely got past the stinky things (TBH still haven't.).

Vaped and lost a lot of weight as by the time I'd fed the dogs there wasn't enough left to feed me.

Got to eat for about 2.5 weeks per month. Vaped a lot more (But bought stinkies when I could - by this time had gone from 40-5 a day (but not by choice))

Managed to switch almost completely to vaping.

Managed to get the mortgage paid off so suddenly could afford to get the mutts to the vets, to be able to eat enough (And a bit more than enough - put on 50lbs in weight Sad)

Then early this year a friend of mine died at 67. Not sure why Kay's death hit me as hard as it did. That got me back on to the fags big time.

Now I'm back to vaping but am not entirely stinky free. Wish I was...
