RE: What have you got on order ?
After spending too long with a file last night, the heat from cutting the atty stand steel with an angle grinder has considerably hardened the steel, I went and ordered an end mill. While a drill press doesn't have a spindle designed for sideways motion, at least not intentionally, I can just use it like a drill, 6mm at a time. This ought to be much easier than filing.

I hope

Dear Santa, I want a milling machine!

And the space to put it.

How thick is the steel??

I'd recommend a power file for straight edges in thicker gauges, bench belt grinder would be better but it's kinda hard to get one into a draw Confused

10mm.

I don't have the space for industrial machinery unfortunately. A cheap bench grinder would be adequate, a belt one better. I suspect anything any good is outwith my budget or space available.

There is that Smile

That first one looks interesting. And affordable. What sort of money are the belts?

I reckon the metal I bought, most of the cost was shipping.

RE: What have you got on order ?
I need to investigate the local metal dealers and find one that doesn't have a huge minimum order and will let me collect what I want.

Belts are about 50p - 80p each, have a gander on ebay.

Some places will give you cuts but small quantities isn't usually worth their while unless it's offcuts they already have.

RE: What have you got on order ?
1mx25mmx10mm thick. A couple of those. Cut to length as required with an angle grinder as I'd rather not spend half my life with a hacksaw. And still have to file the ends. The angle grinder nut is currently stuck though it has had a good dousing with WD40 so I may be able to remove it soon and fit a grinding disk to clean up the edges.
