I think the problem with pewter would be the temperature, thats why I think most manufacturers produce the gear with SS and Aluminium

Don might know of the reason - it is a very attractive metal - I think.

I like it too, most alloys have a % of it in it, but in pure form the heat resistance of it isn't the highest, thats why its used f.e. for soldering.

Pewter is soft as shite, first drop and it'd be a blob of metal on the floor Confused
I'm inclined to think machining it would be more hassle than its worth.
Yeah, low melting point too.
It doesn't rust but it does tarnish quite readily, blacken hands from sustained contact might be an issue..

Thanks gently - something else I have learned. It is a shame - I take it there is no way to toughen it up.

RE: What have you got on order ?
Probably because it was originally a tin/lead alloy. These days it doesn't contain lead but is still pretty soft unless a bunch of antimony (Which ain't cheap) is added. The melting point (170-230C depending on alloy constituents) is far too low for anything that might get warm.

You're much more likely to see Zamak (pot metal) or its ilk used as they're way cheaper.

RE: What have you got on order ?
If you were to bung in copper and antimony it'd be harder but the melting point is still around that for solder.

Zamak, after spending an afternoon trying to repair it I now hate the stuff with a passion!

If you have a clean fracture. As in you just broke it, superglue works really, really well. As well as it does on anything.
