Now that counts as frighteningly expensive.

I know the problem with vanishing gear - my assistants are good at vanishing stuff. And customising it. Chester firmly believes that there is nothing that is not improved by a few (or a lot) tooth marks on it.

RE: What have you got on order ?
If you find the right places you can get it for as little as $50 per cubic inch !!!! so not quite that bad.. anyhow found it!!

I've identified it as definitely the Vespel and not the Delrin (I bought both together some years back) the Vespel is very hard brittle feeling. Also you can hold a flame to it and nothing happens (no surface shine with heat)

You're welcome to it Don as it'll never get used here and it may as well be put to a good use.. you'll know you have the best center pin insulators on the planet too Tongue

This piece is in Rod form.. it's 1.5 inches wide and 1.25 inches high (2.209 cubic inches) bargain for nowt! might want to send a bit to Graham too if you can cut it.. there's enough there for dozens of insulators

Cheers! Maybe send it to Graham first he has access to more and better tools and nice things like machine shops.

RE: What have you got on order ?
Lemme ponder on it, there's not much length to go in a chuck there, how does it hold a thread? I'm wondering about drilling and tapping it in a lathe then thread and bond it to an alu rod so it can be machined.

Hmmm. Its certainly a start and if its as heat resistant as you say, maybe we can put in for a bit more to machine further insulators, i've already killed quite a few. Let me speak to my dads partner too, he might be able to point us towards something he can acquire, I'm pretty certain he would be interested to help. Smile

RE: What have you got on order ?
you'll probably have to cut it into small square rods first, you can't glue this stuff so that's not an option. The other alternative is to cut it into discs and use a hole cutter after milling the center hole.

Should hold a thread very well

The other alternative is pure PTFE which can easily handle the heat but is a bit on the soft side.. Delrin is harder but not as heat resistant which leads into the only materials capable of being strong enough and heat resistant enough such as Vespel, Meldin or Peek (Vespel being the most costly)

Peek is what is generally used. Wonder what a foot long 3/8 diameter piece costs?

A lot of the insulators I've melted are top hat shaped, to give you an idea what I'm pondering.

Seems M7 is not a standard nut size. Bummer. I was hoping that I could just get a couple of hex nuts to make the 510 body from.
