You didn't just say "dolphin" did you? Sad
It's an east coast of Florida thing. Same fish as mahi, just a different name.

RE: What did you get today?
Dolphinfish I believe is the colloquial name for mahi mahi. But I could be mistaken. They're ugly buggers, but taste alright. I've had shark before, that was interesting. Kind of like the steak of the fish family, tougher and meatier. I prefer tuna or salmon, but that's probably mostly because I worked in a Japanese restaurant and ate sushi most days.

Random tangent, what's the weirdest things you guys have eaten? I've had kangaroo, alligator, bear, elk, and lion before. The bear was ground into stew, tasted like meat. The elk was on its own, smoked and gamey. The alligator was in a casserole so it was hard to pick out the flavor. The kangaroo was kind of like really tender steak consistency-wise, but with a weird almost chicken-y flavor. and the lion was tough as hell, I assume on account of them being lean animals. I'm not 100% sure if 100% of those menu items are legal in the states. I also had pate foie gras in Paris, which I believe is illegal in the USA on account of PETA.

I've eaten a variety of insects from beetles to spiders.

RE: What did you get today?
I have made my own foie gras. It's OK. I prefer the breast heart and gizzards of fowl though. I have eaten many a strange things, camel being one from overseas. I can't really guage what's weird anymore.

RE: What did you get today?
I had an ostrich burger once. Extremely bland without seasoning. No character to the meat whatsoever.

RE: What did you get today?
The list will be a long one but suffice to say when you're hungry and have the required survival and/or military training, ones limits are tested and the concept of sustenance over-rides the mental block attached to eating rodents, snakes, scorpion, bugs and all that matters is remembering which NOT to eat. (bright colourful insects are a no-go!) Smile

As for larger commercially available in various countries meals, emu, elk, bear are all delicious if prepared right. Shark steak is great, again, if prepared right, otherwise is dry.....Catfish is one of my faves.

I have yet to be able to only have one serving of LA swamp rat (nutria) gumbo. Add some chili peppers, okra, dirty rice and nutria and you have an amazing jambalaya.

I've always wanted to try nutria ever since I saw it on some PBS show a few years ago. It was a show about Louisiana swamp people or something, but it really piqued my interest.
