Vaping industry now fighting fire with fire
The American E-Liquid Manufacturing Standards Association, which represents e-liquid manufacturers, has recently decided to fight fire with fire. It is no secret that tobacco companies have spent millions of pounds on lobbying firms over the last few years and now it seems that the vaping industry is doing likewise. The hiring of The FGA Group, which specialises in consulting and government affairs, could open a whole new chapter for the vaping sector.

Public perception

If you ask the vast majority of the general public they will immediately associate vaping products with tobacco cigarettes. This seems to be a given amongst many people when in reality the only thing linking them together is nicotine. History shows us that while nicotine is addictive, it is the chemicals created by igniting tobacco which are deemed to have caused most health issues. This is still a bone of contention amongst critics and supporters of tobacco cigarettes but the medical profession think differently.

The idea that vaping products are to all intents and purposes the same as tobacco cigarettes is plainly wrong and a perception that the lobbying group hired by the American E-Liquid Manufacturing Standards Association will need to “correct”.

Does lobbying work?

Whether we like it or not the lobbying of those in prominent positions has been common practice within the business community for decades. The reality is that unless you put forward your side of the story how can anyone make an informed decision?

There has been growing frustration amongst the vaping community that large tobacco and pharmaceutical companies have been using their enormous war chests to lobby politicians and regulators. When you are as powerful and influential as the larger US tobacco and pharmaceutical groups then politicians and regulators will stand up and listen when you talk. However, now that the vaping industry has finally decided to fight fire with fire we could be on the verge of some interesting exchanges!

Creating a clear picture

There are many misconceptions and misunderstandings in relation to any health implications associated with vaping products. Even some of the most ardent critics readily admit they are significantly less harmful with some going as far as to suggest there are up to 90% less harmful than tobacco cigarettes. This is not something which the general public are always aware of with many negative stories seemingly appearing unaided in the press. So, the simple idea of creating a level playing field where views can be put forward and opinions made in private by the general public seems more than fair?

The only major problem is the fact that the tobacco and pharmaceutical companies have significantly larger war chests which they can use to fund their lobbying activities. Perhaps the biggest plus point for the vaping industry is the support of the general public and in particular the vaping community. Even those with no vested interest whatsoever find it difficult to understand why politicians and regulators have been so obstructive and why they are obsessed with bringing tobacco products and vaping devices under the same umbrella?

Perhaps this is stage one of the journey towards vaping taxes which will in time replace a significant portion of the current tobacco tax income stream?

RE: Vaping industry now fighting fire with fire
We needed to start doing this years ago.  We've got a lot of catching up to do.

Remind one liberal per day, that laws affect only the law-abiding.
