US focus switches from electronic cigarettes to marijuana
President Obama's comments at the weekend, suggesting that marijuana is no more harmful than alcohol, have opened up a new debate in the US. This comment was made just a short time after Washington and Colorado legalised the sale of marijuana with many suggesting this was a way to increase tax income. While there is no doubt that tobacco tax will reduce in the years to come, many people had seen electronic cigarettes as the natural long term income replacement. However, it seems as though the US authorities have their eye on marijuana which is very popular across many states.

At a time when the electronic cigarette industry is under pressure, under focus and the subject of myths, untruths and outright lies, it will be interesting to see the focus shift towards marijuana in the short to medium term.

Is it all about the money?

While the likes of Washington and Colorado have legalised the sale of marijuana, under strict regulations, the likelihood is that this move will bring significant tax benefits in due course. Despite the fact that various US authorities are adamant that health is more important than income, the ongoing relaxation of marijuana laws does in many ways play into the hands of sceptics.

When you bear in mind that the US authorities received in excess of $17 billion from tobacco tax income in 2011, the ongoing reduction in the popularity of tobacco cigarettes will hit government income hard. For some time now it seemed as though electronic cigarettes were the main target of the US regulators and the US government but the potential legalisation of marijuana sales in other states brings about an interesting development.

Will this impact this impact the regulating of electronic cigarettes?

The electronic cigarette industry has been the target of rumours, mystery and suspense over the last few months with constant speculation regarding the introduction of new regulations. Inadvertently President Obama may well have shifted the focus from electronic cigarettes to the legalisation of marijuana in some states across the US. This will not stop the ongoing move towards the introduction of electronic cigarette regulations, which many in the industry broadly welcome, but it may well take some of the pressure off the sector.

The introduction of legalised marijuana sales is likely to grab the attention of a wider selection of the US population and the comparison with alcohol will no doubt prompt a number of discussions. In some ways this plays into the hands of US government critics because it does seem to be all about the money. The billions of dollars received per annum from the tobacco tax will need to be replaced as tobacco sales continue to fall and while electronic cigarettes seemed like the chosen path, perhaps marijuana could be the next big US government income stream?

The electronic cigarette industry has been under intense pressure for some time now, with US and European regulators determined to halt the growth in sales, so perhaps a short respite as marijuana sales take centre stage could reduce the number of scare stories published by the worldwide media?
