TVF Map?
It'd be a bit of fun without getting too detailed about where folks actually live.

With UK postcodes, this is easy, you just use the first part.

Does lopping off the last few digits of a zip code do the same in the US?

I don't know how zip codes work you see.

RE: TVF Map?
So if I've read that right, the first three digits of a zip code give you roughly state-sized blocks. It would seem that 4 digits of the zip code should be non-specific enough if they work the way I think they do.

In fact that Wiki article is rather waffly. It may be it assumes that "everyone knows" all about zip codes. Not part of my cultural heritage I'm afraid.

If I send something to someone with only the zip code will it arrive at the intended recipient? So If I post something to John Doe in PA at zip code 12345, is that adequate information for it to be delivered, or do you still need a street address?

What I'm asking is if

John Doe
PA 12345

adequate information for the mailman?

Or is there a better nonspecific locator to use in the US.

RE: TVF Map?
For me, the 5 number zip would be non-specific enough, 37421 covers most of Chattanooga and it's a fairly populous city. There are around 70 other people in the city who share my first and last name.

Zip codes also have a 4-digit suffix which is rarely used but fine-tunes the location a bit more, iirc I think it refines it to which street you live on.

As far as I know, you need at least the street address and zip code for mail to be delivered. Each post office covers a single zip code, so the zip code is actually more important than city/state. I haven't tried sending mail without a full address though so I don't know for sure.

RE: TVF Map?
In my case it is the entire city I live in. And since there is only one such city with that name in the entire world, that's quite unique. And completely irrelevant. And this post should be met with extreme indifference.

Just checking - participation will of course be completely voluntary - but I don't want it to be possible to determine where exactly anyone lives.

The first half of my postcode AB24 could be around 80,000 people and maybe 20,000 addresses. The first half of the place in the sticks' postcode (AB36) could be less than 400 people and about as many residences.

I think this would be a fun project. With extremely limited research, I couldn't find a way to combine the google map locations, unless I was actually willing to do some work on it. I'd be happy to give you my zip, 77356, because you would definitely the street address to find me. Our PO is pretty bad, not even with every detail is there a guarantee it will make it to my home.

RE: TVF Map?
I'll need to rake around Google Maps. I know it can be done, but I don't (at the moment) know how.
