RE: Sanity check
Often thought a car kettle would be a good idea but my chosen brewing method couldn't be done while moving. And a supply of suitable bottles (No biggie when you work in a hospital) for the inevitable byproducts of vast excess of coffee.

RE: Sanity check
Will do once I get around to building it. The regulators have been shipped and I've found the dead eGo battery. I'll be interested to find what is inside it. Will make sure it is dead flat before I gut it. Pics of that could be interesting too.

Not much inside them Don just a tiny circuit board and a tiny cell

RE: Sanity check
Regulator just arrived at work. I'm pretty sure I've got a lighter socket plug in the kitchen at home where I also have a regulated 13.8V linear (i.e., it hums, it's huge and it's heavy.) power supply so can test out of the wind/rain/snow/hail/sleet/whatever.

I've been thinking about some M7 threaded nuts as the 510 connector, gives me more flexibility. I can use copper wire (I have some 63A stuff lying around) for the centre contact and hot glue as the insulator. There's a Maplin (Radio Shack equivalent) about a mile from my house so I can get all of what I need for prices only 6x what I'd pay including shipping from China. But I can pick them up from the store. And a B&Q (Home Depot equivalent) just a mile or two from there. And FT appears already to have shut down for CNY...

I wonder how well hot glue works as a potting compound. That could double as a phase change heatsink.

Hot glue doesn't work too well Don - been there got the t-shirt Smile the atty gets warm and you'll be chasing the center pin further and further down inside until eventually it no longer reaches. Araldite works well though to keep it in place.

Regarding the heatsink. If you lift the transistor slightly off the board you can slide a copper plate underneath then attach the copper to a heatsink - Works extremely well and doesn't even get warm at 3 amps. You may need to warm the solder on the back of the transistor first as they're usually soldered down.

RE: Sanity check
Not sure how easy it is for you to get bare 510 connectors, but you could do a female rca to female 510 connector in a small project box, and have your momentary switch installed in the same box.

So on the actual unit you can use a female rca jack for output, rca cable to the mod, female rca jack to the switch, switch to 510 connector.

I have actually put a lot of thought into a mod like this. But as many of you may have realized... I am a slacker
