Review of the Vapefly Pixie RDA
I received this free for review from Vapefly. In line with my personal policy, review freebies are given away once the review's done. The atomiser came nicely packaged with a tight paper wrapper round the printed white box.

There are security seals on the box.

The manual could be more useful, it is smaller print than my eyesight prefers these days. It is in a shedload of languages with about 5 pages per language.

The foam round the atty is a tight fit, the ripples in the foam around the 510 connecter were my thumbnails trying to dig the atty out.

Under the foam which is a tight fit, there is a cardboard platform over the goodie bags.

The goodie bags contain two Clapton coils of nominal resistance 0.35 ohms and two pieces of Firebolt cotton which is enough to rewick the atty at least four times. The coils are 3mm ID and are made of 26g Kanthal wrapped with two strands of 36g Ni80.

The other goodie bag contains a three cornered multitool of no usefulness. It has a Phlips head on the middle arm and two flathead drivers on the sides. There's also an Allen key for the post screws, a spare less restrictive airflow adapter that fits into the middle section of the atty, a bunch of O rings and a squonk pin.

Once you get it out, the atty is pretty plain. Which I like. It has its story on the bottom.

It has a rather nice two piece top cap. The bottom part gives you a reasonably deep juice well of around 6-7mm. Which should be plenty in a MTL device. In normal usage you'd just pull off the top part of the top cap to drip onto it. The O rings for the bottom part are stiffer than the top part. The brown thing at the bottom is an airflow adapter, you get one with 3 1.5mm holes in it and one with an 8x2mm slot.

The airflow adapters come out of the front. This is not obvious at first. Took me a minute to figure that out and which way round they go. They direct the air directly onto the coil which should improve flavour.

The deck is nice and simple and holds well onto the provided Claptons though the legs will need cutting short against the back of the post once you've got them in place. You could add another coil but there is utterly no point in doing so, the airflow won't go near a second coil.

Wicking it:

Enough cotton left to rewick it:

Wick installed. A bit too much cotton. But it works. It'll vape a while on what that lot will hold. I'd use a lot less cotton if I were using the squonk pin.

Stuck on to the RX75 with the bottom half of the top cap. The RX75 is not the optimal choice for this atomiser given the atomiser's lack of height. I'll measure it in a bit. This makes for a smaller chamber which, other things being equal, improves flavour.

The supplied 510 drip tip is quite large bore, I make it about 8mm. Of course you could use any 510 of your choice.

On the upper top cap you have the choice of a single hole of about 2mm diameter (Of course you don't have to use a full hole's worth if you don't want to. and a slot of around 2x8mm. In conjunction with the adapters you can tune the airflow to suit. The slot airflow adapter is about 8mm which will allow for DTL with very little restriction. For MTL with the more restrictive airflow adapter you can turn down the air all the way down to "I can't get a draw out of this". For those wanting more restricted airflow you might want to use a different 510 drip tip as this one is about as wide bore as a 510 drip tip can be. I measure it as roughly 8mm ID.

I'm not fond of shorty 510s like this one, burning my lips on the top cap is not a preferred way to vape. On the RX75 you will want to put a longer drip tip on it. As you can see. Unless you enjoy kissing the top of your mod Smile

RE: Review of the Vapefly Pixie RDA
Now I've gone into the construction and assembly in rather excessive detail, I'll go and vape on it for a bit to see how I get on with it.

While you wait, here is Vapefly's video on it.

RE: Review of the Vapefly Pixie RDA
I remembered to bring a longer drip tip with me.

The stock one didn't pull out where I thought it did, there is a black plastic lip built into the top cap so attempts to pry out the drip tip from there failed miserably.

Pushing it out from the back worked though. The drip tip I put in it is considerably more restrictive than the stock one - as well as longer Smile

RE: Review of the Vapefly Pixie RDA
Turns out it is stealthable in the office. With the more restrictive drip tip and the more restrictive air adaptor it is still fine for DTL at 40W.

RE: Review of the Vapefly Pixie RDA
Hi Don - the Pixie looks quite promising as a dripper - the quality looks really good. Seems perfect for MTL.

RE: Review of the Vapefly Pixie RDA
I'm not sure about that. It certainly ticks the boxes. Single coil, 510 drip tip, ability to shut down the air.

But I think it is a cloud chucker. Not sure yet.

But 0.35 ohm Clapton provided. I'm going to put something that actually looks like an MTL build in it. The Clapton produces next to nothing at 20W.

RE: Review of the Vapefly Pixie RDA
7 wraps of 0.42mm (25.68g) Kanthal on 3mm should give me around 0.9 ohms. Steam Engine recommends 23W. That sounds rather more MTL than 0.35 ohm Claptons.

Something it doesn't say in the manual but does in the web page is that you fit the coil then pull it down with a suitable rod till the rod is in grooves in the base of the atty for perfect positioning. Sounds a little low to me but I'll give it a go.

That's what that included L-shaped rod is for, no?
