Protank Mini 3 Problem (New Vaper)
Hi just joined the forum and I'm glad to be entering the world of vaping Smile.
I just received my first set up, a mini protank 3 on a vision Spinner 2 and I think I'm having issues with it unless I'm being a complete newbie.
Basically my issue with it is that it takes a while for the vape to actually start tasting nice, I have to endure multiple harsh almost metallic tasting hits before the flavour and the harshness go away.
Like I said once I get past these hits the vaporiser works great! However if I leave it alone for a while and come back to it, I then have to endure that awful taste once again.
I've tried both a 1.5 ohm and 2 ohm coil on multiple voltages to see if that made any difference, but no change...
Is this normal and what do you guys recommend me trying?
Thanks in advance!
Adam.

Hello and welcome adtither!

It's good to have you here.

Sounds to me like a wicking issue - but I'm not an expert. Try turning down the voltage as low as it goes and see if that helps.

I have tried it on the lowest voltage and the problem persists. There is a slight spitting noise when the button is help for a while. Is this normal?

Yes, the spitting noise usually means good stuff is happening. My guess is the wick needs to get warm to wick properly. I'm not sure how they are put together so I don't know if replacing the (usually) silica with a small amount of cotton wool would help.

This video might be of use. Or might not.

I have heard that Kanger have been having quality control issues. It might be worth getting a head from somewhere else in the hope it came from a better batch.

Thanks for the reply. I have a big feeling it is the wick that's the problem and will try out the cotton wick and come back with a reply. Do you know if you can buy replacement coils for the protank that already have a cotton wick?

Hey buddy, welcome to TVF!

Sounds to me like it could be the juice you're using is having to get warm before it wicks properly. A high VG juice would cause exactly that problem. Do you know the PG/VG ratio of the juice you're using ?

Alternatively you could try removing the top wick (assuming they still have top wicks like the original protanks and evods)

I have tried both a 50/50 and a 70VG/30 mix. The 70/30 actually seems to be working better than the other one. Yes it is possible to remove the top wick could you explain the benefit of doing so? Also it is a dual coil if that makes any difference.

RE: Protank Mini 3 Problem (New Vaper)
The extra top wicks are there primarily to stop the flooding issues but sometimes it can go the other way and restrict the flow too much.

I would start by removing half a wick and go from there, it only takes a little too much removed and youll be plagued with gurgling and flooding issues so remove sparingly Big Grin

Good luck and let us know how you get on... if that doesn't work we'll see what else it could be. Dual coils do need a little more juice flow too.

By half a wick do you mean cut off a bit from each side? If so there isn't much to take off at all on either side of the coil. I'm assuming if removing a whole wick I should remove the wick that is not surround by the coil (sorry really new with this). By removing the wick that is not surrounded by the coil (one below the coil) it will leave a gap in the metal, is that okay?

If you watch the video Don posted it'll show you what to do from about 4 mins onwards. He takes the wicks out.

There's 2 extra wicks in there. I would take them out and remove half the strands from one of them prior to refitting.
