Politicians now join in the fight to reduce the popularity of electronic cigarettes
Over the last couple of years we have seen regulators around the world attempting to reduce the ongoing popularity of electronic cigarettes, we have seen health bodies release an array of claims and counterclaims but now it seems as though politicians are looking to get in on the act. A UK government health minister this week claimed that electronic cigarettes could be the gateway to an increase in tobacco cigarette sales despite the fact that evidence in the public domain would appear to suggest otherwise.

It will be interesting to see whether this is a concerted campaign by politicians in the UK, and indeed around the world, to further muddy the water of the electronic cigarette industry. The simple fact that electronic cigarettes do not contain the 4000+ toxins readily available in the average tobacco cigarette seems to have been overlooked not to mention the cost factor associated with tobacco cigarettes and electronic cigarettes.

Where is the evidence to back up these claims?

While governments around the world continue to claim that electronic cigarettes are the entry point to an array of evils such as tobacco cigarettes, etc, the evidence from electronic cigarette users is very different. Time after time we have seen reports and surveys confirm that electronic cigarette users have no intention of switching to tobacco cigarettes, whether indeed they used them in the past or have never used them before. It seems very strange to suggest that those who once smoked tobacco cigarettes, and have since switched to electronic cigarettes, will for some bizarre reason undo all of their hard work and switch back to tobacco?

Perhaps the main reason why governments, regulators and critics of electronic cigarette industry are able to introduce myths and rumours to the argument is because of a lack of publicly available medical trial data. The fact is that all medical trials to date have shown at worst that electronic cigarettes are "less harmful" than their tobacco cigarette counterparts and indeed many people seem to find them useful as a means of cutting down on their tobacco cigarette intake.

An open and honest debate

If we look back just 12 months, the electronic cigarette industry was being overpowered by critics and those with a vested interest but the situation is very different today. In many ways it is the ongoing review by the FDA in America and the shenanigans within Europe, which brought in an array of changes to both electronic cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes against the initial will of the European Parliament, which have brought the industry together.

We have seen many demonstrations, many online support groups emerging and indeed this has led to perhaps the most transparent period the industry has ever seen. The simple fact is that no responsible electronic cigarette manufacturer or retailer would ever sell to minors, ongoing medical trials will clarify myths and rumours about electronic cigarettes and perhaps more importantly, the voice of electronic cigarette users is finally being heard. While there is still a monumental fight ahead to overturn the power of the regulators, and governments around the world, it seems electronic cigarette users are certainly up for the battle!

Hi Don

This is a very tricky one because the moment they are mentioned as some form of "medicine" then a whole raft of new regulations, laws, etc will be cast upon the industry.

Regards,

Mark

This thread is over 4 and a half years old. At least it is nice to see some improvement in the stance taken in the UK - slowly but surely we are getting there - and so is the market - big difference to four years ago in the gear available[Image: smile.gif][Image: good.gif]

It is good to be able to look back a few years and see the changes and advances that have been made - IMO[Image: smile.gif].

We now have an electronic notice board in our doctors surgery - it has a whole section now on ECigs as a smoking cessation tool - who would have thought that 4 years ago[Image: smile.gif].
