Orchid v4 drilled out airflow??
Hey all. So, I've been seeing a lot of custom drilling in Kayfuns for more airflow. I was just curious to see if anyone has tried drilling out there Orchid RDTAs?? Finally got mine back in working order after many rebuilds and found the sweet spot but I'm just seeing whats out there for customizing these things!

SO... There IS someone that has the same thoughts I do about doin' a root canal on an Orchid.. I'm so tempted, but haven't found someone that has a drill press I can use. I thought about just hand drilling it, but Id never forgive myself if I screwed it up. Care to share that sweet spot you found?

I gotta get me a drill press... I've hand drilled several atties, and let me just say that it is not a fun thing to do. I've got a few scars to prove it, though fortunately I've somehow managed to keep all my digits.

RE: Orchid v4 drilled out airflow??
Yeah man! Im using 26g kanthal doing 8 wraps and cutting the cotton to basically lay down over the juice wells, not in them. I found if I put any cotton in the juice wells at all, the juice resists to flow to the coil for some reason! So I cut the cotton down and lay the ends over the juice wells instead of making them longer and putting them in the juice wells. Although now it looks like I'll need to buy a new outside tube for it because a juice I just tried in it seemed to dry and make a really hard crust all around the glass that I cannot get off for the life of me. Very disappointing. Do you know if a bell cap will work on a v4 orchid?

There are those juices that are "Known Tank Crackers" I'm not sure all what.. but Cinnamon's and the like are really good for that. Im not sure, but I do think I saw a solid SS tube to replace the plastic see thru piece for just such occasions.

Did you ever do any drilling on your v_4? I have a dremmel, and Ive often been quite tempted to try to open it up a little more, I like a really airy draw, and with dual coils in it, I think the Orchid would be able to keep up.

WOW!! That's a breath of fresh air!! I have an acquaintance that works in a machine shop.. maybe I can get him to follow your lead. other than the slow filling, thats the only shortcoming I can think of with the v_4. The KFL doesn't have enough meat on it to bear that.

That is a seriously steady pair of hands. Especially as SS is a pain to drill out, that stuff is HARD.

I'd not even try without a drill press.
