Married Cells
OK, I've read a few threads here on the subject, but am looking for a little further clarification. I've read in more than one thread about the importance of 'married cells'. Now, most of those threads reference using only one mod for one cell; in other words, if you have an RX200, the cells you use in it can ONLY be used with that mod forever now, and can ONLY have been inserted when brand new.

Now personally, that doesn't make sense. I can understand that you need to use cells with balanced charges (especially if the mod will be used at near-max cell discharge capacity), and cells of the same type, but I just don't understand the problem of having 16 HG2 cells, all charged to the same level, and using them in any mod and in any combination I want.

For example- I use the same two chargers, both i4's. I have 16 LG HG2 cells. They go, at random, between my iPV5, the wife's iPV5, her iPV 4s, even sometimes the Sigelei 30 Mini's and SMY TC60 Minis, and for a short while even the tri-cell RX200. After about 9 months, and still with some of those cells being original to my habit and still in the rotation, I have had no issues.

Have I just been lucky, or is it really not a big deal as I suspect?

RE: Married Cells
It is not too big of deal but ... diischarge rates on mods will differ. So some batteries will wear better than others. The fact that they are all charged and the same tyope is good but you might find some betteries discharging at a slower or faster rate than others ... so they are not really balanced. Personally I keep sets together. I will use any set of two batteries in any two battery mod and any set of three batteries in any three battery mod. That way I know they are balanced. Did that make sense Tin?

Yes, although I don't even keep sets. Just constantly rotating the stock.

RE: Married Cells
Can you keep track of 16 cells charge cycles? Also if one had been disapated .3 more than another and this happened two or three times over throughout your collection could you keep track which ones were lower than others before charge? If you can then your a better man than me. If you can't then some cells will degradate quicker than others, placing more duty on its pair, causing it in turn to degradate quicker.

Yes. That is the issue. Your batteries will not all be the same status despite being the same type. So you can do it your way but it will eventually wear on the batteries. Even with married batteries you should reverse the order in which you insert them. I notice on my cuboid one battery always discharges faster than the other - so I switch them around every charge.

This is what i do keep the batteries paired but use in any mod, i keep them in boxes so i don't forget which pair is which, through i'm going to have to find some cases that hold 3 batteries now with having the rx200 lol

RE: Married Cells
Well, I decided on a compromise, let me know what you think. I labeled two of every one with a designator (two #1's, two #2's, etc), so they will always be used together from now until they die. I know it's too late for the existing cells, but I did get a couple new pairs recently so they will be together from the start. And while they won't always be in the same device, they will alternate between two iPV 4s's, which are kind of like the same device. We've settled in to the 4s's and won't be using anything else for a while. Unfortunately, the 5s is just too buggy and annoying so it has been relegated to the happy drawer. Hopefully this new pairing system will satisfy the marriage requirements. And yes, they're boy-girl.

RE: Married Cells
You should draw happy little stick men/women on them, that way you can know which is the boy/girl and rotate them in the mod. Tongue

RE: Married Cells
I don't know as much about cell safety as some of the other guys, hopefully Don will come along and set you right Tongue I would think that you'll be fine with that, but I'm not 100% certain since the cells have already been used so I'm not sure if marrying them now will be good enough.

RE: Married Cells
I'm super anal about this, even though I know it's not as big a deal as some make it out to be.  I presently have 5 pairs (I've given some away), and they're all different types, and thus different colors.  I have a color rotation - I always go from one set to the next in order.  And each cell is numbered 1 and 2.  All the pairs go in 1-2 for a complete color rotation, and when I'm back to set #1, they go in 2-1 for a complete color rotation.

Does it matter?  Hell if I know, LOL.
