Magnetic Stirrer

Oh Sorry thinking its youtube

Following on from my first attempts at making a magnetic stirrer, I have now been successful, and can mix (Helps Steeping) the e-liquid much better.

I wanted to make the stirrer out of bits I already had, in the end I only bought some magnets.

Parts List
Magnetic beads (set of 7 on ebay)
2 Neodymium Magnets (12mm x 3mm)
12V fan (I used an old fan, 0.08A) nothing special
12V power supply (I have 2A constant voltage type, normally used to power 5M Led strips)
12V Voltage controller (I again used a Dimmer control for 5M Led strips)
Nuts, bolts, heat gun, washer
Cardboard

I wanted the stirrer to produce a vortex, which would be ideal mixing and adding air. I used a mixing time of only 5 Min, and also made the liquid warm by placing beaker in bowl of warm water.

Placed nuts and bolts in each corner of fan

Got the height needed for the gap

Got the outside edge of magnet for balancing

Fitted it all together, and connected up power supply

I soon found out that you need to test the size of bead needed, and to bring up the speed slowly, waiting a min before each adjustment, if you run it to fast the beads will bounce.

Beads that worked best

Testing (Water)
MK1

Finally I made a mix total of 60Ml (24Mg Nicotine) 50/50 PG/VG and 5% flavors. This was quite thick, but I was able to get a vortex by slowly increasing the fan speed.

RE: Magnetic Stirrer
Great got it all working, the biggest problem was getting the magnets wide apart, so I fixed a large washer onto the fan, then I was able to place the magnets on this metal, adjusting their position until it looked central. I did do a few checks before finally drawing a line around the magnets with a felt pen, then used a glue gun to fix them.

If you connect up a PC fan to 12V it will run too fast, while you do need a fan with a bit of pull, its speed needs to be adjusted in use, slowly bringing the speed up, waiting a little while for the fan to max out at that torque will suddenly bring up the vortex.

I am very sure this device will also work with 100Ml, and higher, perhaps it may not vortex every time, but it will mix very well. The e-liquid in the glass beaker can then be transferred to your bottles, and the usual steeping in a dark place can continue.

This mixing does speed up the process of steeping, but more than anything its a good mixer, where only a PTFE bead is placed in the liquid, cutting down on possible contamination.

Led Dimmer (Used to control speed of 12V fan)

Cheap 2A 12V constant voltage Power Supply

I have also tested this using a 6Mg mix, and 12Mg mix, the device works well on any of the mixes.

RE: Magnetic Stirrer
Great job, mate! Do you think it would work with any higher VG, say 60/40, or is the 50/50 pretty much the max?

RE: Magnetic Stirrer
I wanted a Vortex, and if I didn't get one it was a fail. I also wanted to use a standard PC fan and not buy a special motor.

The stirring action would work with 100% VG or treacle :0 but the torque needed to produce the Vortex for a 100% VG mix just isn't there using a PC fan.

So yes it will stir, but don't think you would get a vortex... But Ill give it a try before moving on to a more powerful motor :0 (MK3)

Its 3:15am so will try tomorrow :0

RE: Magnetic Stirrer
Ok I made up 70Ml of a mix with 70%VG and 30% PG little higher than you said, it was also a 12mg Nicotine (VG base) and small amount of flavor, and 70ml instead of my normal 60ml mix.

The liquid was stirring very good with this mix, and beats shaking a bottle that's for sure. But it didn't produce a vortex, the more liquid added the larger the stirring bar.

The larger the stirring bar the more torque you need from the motor to get that vortex.

If your happy to do without the vortex :0 it will be a great stirrer.

I will be looking to be able to vortex 100Ml of the thick stuff, so will look at better motors now and see if I can do it.
