I twist in pretty much the same manner, only I don't go slowly.. I rev the nuts off the drill while pulling hard on the pliers until the wire snaps at the chuck or plier end, tighter the better.

My experience with coil making is that the shortest ramp up time added to the best capillary action with the largest surface area makes the nicest vapour. Twisted ticks some of those boxes so it's better than plain round imo.

Did some experiments with 0.15mm wire - in order to get some sort of useful resistance you had to twist it like crazy. It was so weak that it wouldn't twist much before snapping.

It needs thicker wire than that.

6 strands Wink make three two strand twisted wires then twist the three twisted 's.

I take it back, 0.15 is 37g not 34g like I thought Punish that probably is too fine to twist.

It is!

You can break the stuff by looking too hard at it.

RE: How do you dip yer wick?
I'm not sure I wasn't confused between 0.15 and 0.18 rather than the gauges I put there, because they're clearly wrong. Ah well, moving on..

It was time to re-coil the airforce rda, swapping out the 3mm for a 2.5mm coil, hoping for better air flow.. that never came.
I've been playing with staged heating for a while now, trying to find the perfect blend. This coil isn't it, though it performs OK.

It's a Clapton of 22g anarchist wire and 28g kanthal. 5 2.5mm wraps at around .17

It does stage the heating but the transition is too slow, I'm looking for a short fizzle of flavourous vapour followed by a knock out punch of heavy dense vapour in an obvious, almost 'gear change' kinda way.

Here's the first stage,

The inner core lights up, holds for around a second, then the outer wrap gets going.

Like I said, it's not what I was looking for so the search for the perfect staged coil is still on Smile

:swoon:Cheers spas.

Quote:*any chance someone could put the top pic under "gets going" please. I dropped it in the wrong place and can't edit without re-doing the whole post Swoon thanks

Sorted... Spas

RE: How do you dip yer wick?
looks nice as usual .

i need to focus on 2 coils that are more uniform , much easier when only buildin 1 . once i get the slop out ill re attack the more complex builds

When life hands you lemmons , make lemmon aid . When life hands you coconuts , stuff them in your shirt and ask if they make your boobs look big .

Getting them to look even and fire up simultaneously is such a tw*t, dunno about anyone else but I've hit the hour mark a few times!

"once I get the slop out" no clue what it meant in that particular sentence but I giggled like a school girl. Mosking

the only explanation is my coils are sloppy , 9 wrars each should be much closer than i get with a good share of my builds . i'll get this nailed , i refuse to be out done by an inanimate obect.

RE: How do you dip yer wick?
Aah.. obvious what you meant now.. 2am this morning it read like you were gonna take a dump then build coils. Haha. I should get more sleep!

I'll try making a video while I'm setting some up, maybe I do something you wouldn't normally do?? when you see it it's like "ahh, of course" maybe not, but it could help.
