RE: How do you dip yer wick?
I called you an expert.

If it makes you feel any better, here is an early attempt at a coil build of mine. Almost dead solid perfect!!!

I can't even believe they worked. Seriously, not even gently, Paul, or Michael will try to say they were the experts they are today when they first began to build. Well, maybe Paul will.

I think I posted a few of my earliest builds on here. I'll try to find them. I've had some REALLY awful twisted messes, though usually I don't post them. Heck, I still get some really bad builds every now and then, and I've been making coils for a couple years! Being a perfectionist isn't really possible with building, but it gets easier with practice. And once you realize that, pretty much any coil that works becomes "acceptable."

RE: How do you dip yer wick?
The dumbest thing I still do is accidentally squeeze too tight when they're glowing, which causes the coil to squash and causes me to wag my finger and furrow my brow intently while shouting out a 'Dangit' that is a mix of Homer Simpson and Yosemite Sam. And of course, start over.

And Don, that is a classic. Did you take a pic because you knew it was horrendous, or because you were proud? Regardless, this will make bibs feel a lot better.

Ribbon wire is not really good for making Genesis coils.

And silica is hardly optimal wicking material either.

RE: How do you dip yer wick?
I kinda wish I did photograph my first coils. I recall I left the legs at 180 degree angles apart when I wrapped them, not realizing how dumb that was. When I installed them, naturally they bowed out like a table's legs with an elephant sitting on it. And I also recall not realizing the importance of a ohmagically matched pair, so I twisted one leg back over on one coil, effectively adding a half wrap, while twisting the other coil leg under, effectively removing a half wrap. I couldn't understand why one coil went bright orange and melted a leg off in about 2 seconds. Almost thought I may not be capable of doing it. Then I made the next pair with my tongue intently sticking out and eyes narrowed in deep focus and concentration, like a smart person.

RE: How do you dip yer wick?
Here's a link to the first one I posted in this thread. That was my first dual-coil build. I can't seem to find pics of my first builds, and photobucket is being lame so I'll look through there later when it's back up.

Total Magic TW - just total magic - no one can come close when you really are in form - one of the funniest posts for a long time - I am still laughing at your description of 'concentration' and the ending - like a smart person - only you could come away with that - a totally brilliant post.

Thanks you guys, you really helped my attitude. I really need to put more time into it, rather than thinking, I have wire, I have a jig, what more could I need.
