Guess how many electronic cigarette users in the UK?
During 2013 a figure of 1.3 million electronic cigarette users was seen as the base data for the electronic cigarette industry. This had increased from 700,000 in 2012 and while many have questioned the significant growth, can you guess how many electronic cigarette users there are in the UK today?

A survey by YouGov (on behalf of ASH) has cast a very interesting light on the industry with confirmation there are around 2.1 million regular electronic cigarette users in the UK. Despite the fact that politicians, tobacco companies and some pharmaceutical groups continue to question the effectiveness of the electronic cigarettes regulatory regime, the public has given them a very strong thumbs up. When you bear in mind that the 2.1 million users have been achieved with very little in the way of positive comment in the mass media, where could the number of UK electronic cigarette users go from here?

Onwards and upwards?

At this moment in time, as we await the future regulatory framework for the electronic cigarette industry, there seems to be growing demand for these products. The scare stories put forward by those opposing the electronic cigarette industry, often at the expense of the tobacco cigarette industry, seem to be falling on deaf ears and the wider public seems to be taking a more "sensible" approach.

When you bear in mind that the US electronic cigarette sector grossed in excess of $1 billion during 2013 and is expected to gross in excess of $5 billion in 2015, this bodes well for the UK sector. We have seen enormous investment by tobacco groups and other investors into the electronic cigarette industry and this is likely to continue. Even the emergence of court action in the US, which many assumed would slow down growth in the industry, has been taken in its stride and has so far had little or no impact upon future investment.

Is the mist beginning to clear?

There is no doubt that certain parties have been happy to portray the electronic cigarette industry are something of a "Wild West" with little or no regulation and something of a free for all. This is far from the truth but for those with a vested interest against a prosperous electronic cigarette industry, it certainly helped their cause.

Over the last few days we have seen some mixed comments regarding medical trials, we have seen confirmation that the FDA expects to make an announcement in the short-term and governments will soon be forced to address the regulatory issue. The fact is that electronic cigarettes will at some stage incur greater regulations but as the benefits of electronic cigarettes, especially over their tobacco cigarette counterparts, become clearer, it will be difficult for governments around the world to introduce too restrictive regulations.

Conclusion

While the UK electronic cigarette industry is still some way behind the growth cycle of its US counterpart, there is no doubt that an increase in regular electronic cigarette users from 700,000 in 2012 to 2.1 million in 2014 is a major step forward. The greater the popularity of electronic cigarettes in UK the less chance that the government will have the opportunity to ban them outright and it should also restrict any public bans. However, time will tell!

Unfortunately I don't share the view that popularity will make their banning less probable. The blaring propaganda and outright lying would suggest that 2.1 million people are to be made criminals. Despite the fact that Prohibition has never worked, will never work and shoves vast sums of cash into the hands of organised crime. Cash that will be utterly untaxed, like the 20% of UK tobacco which has had no tax paid on it.

If the natural tendencies of mankind are so bad that it is not safe to permit people to be free, how is it that the tendencies of these organizers are always good? Do not the legislators and their appointed agents also belong to the human race? Or do they believe that they themselves are made of a finer clay than the rest of mankind?

Hi Gords1001

I saw an article about a fire at a hospital - was that the one which is supposed to have blown up an oxygen tank?

I have just read the details of this horrific incident and hope that poor person is ok as the article says they are fighting for their life. It is dangerous for the press to speculate about the circumstances surrounding the fire but there will obviously need to be a full inquiry.

Regards,

Mark

Hi 18sixfifty

I love these quotes you come up with. They do show one thing, history does repeat itself time and time again.

Regards,

Mark
