Ex-UK government drugs advisor supports electronic cigarettes
While Professor David Nutt may not be a name that many people recognise at this moment in time, he could turn out to be one of the more prominent figures in the ever-growing electronic cigarette industry. He is a previous UK government drugs advisor and has the experience and the reputation to make people sit up and listen to his opinion. So, what has Professor David Nutt been saying about the UK electronic cigarette industry which has hit the headlines?

In simple terms the professor compared the potential impact which electronic cigarettes could have on the health of the UK nation to vaccinations. He believes that electronic cigarettes could be seen as the "greatest health advance since vaccinations" and offer a once in a lifetime opportunity to reduce the ongoing addiction to tobacco cigarettes. Interestingly, he has played down the health concerns surrounding electronic cigarettes and believes they are significantly less harmful than their tobacco cigarette counterparts. If this kind of comment had emerged from the electronic cigarette industry then the individual concerned would have been shot down in flames, ridiculed and the industry would have taken a step backwards. However, where does this leave the electronic cigarette industry now that Professor David Nutt has become involved?

At a time when the industry is under severe pressure from regulators around the world, there is speculation that governments are looking to introduce taxes and many electronic cigarette users are confused, this "plain talking" is perfectly timed. It will be interesting to see how the UK government reacts to ongoing calls for the regulation of electronic cigarettes especially when many members of the public and some prominent health officials believe that no more than light touch regulation should be introduced. In many ways the introduction of high profile individuals with very strong reputations will place significant pressure upon governments, such as the UK authorities, to look at the overall picture and the potential opportunity to reduce dependence upon tobacco cigarettes.

We are also awaiting confirmation of the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) policy on electronic cigarettes although this review has been ongoing for more than two years. There has been speculation and counter speculation that an announcement is due imminently but so far the FDA has refused to comment and nothing has been leaked into the public domain.
