Electronic cigarette companies in favour of market clean up
Over the last few months we have seen a number of politicians suggesting that some electronic cigarette companies are targeting teenagers. Time and time again we have heard claims that adverts are teenage orientated, companies are looking to make electronic cigarettes fashionable and this could easily become a gateway to tobacco cigarettes. Is this really the situation?

If you ask responsible electronic cigarette companies about their marketing targets, their advertising campaigns and their promotional literature, how many are really targeting teenagers?

Lies, damned lies and statistics

Perhaps one of the major challenges for the responsible electronic cigarette company of today is to clean up the market of unscrupulous businesses which may well be targeting the teenage market. There is also the issue of substandard ingredients in some of the low quality/lower-priced electronic cigarettes which are also being used as a stick to beat the wider electronic cigarette market. So, what are the statistics regarding these issues?

Politicians suggest there is anecdotal evidence that some companies are targeting teenagers and spot checks by some regulators have found substandard ingredients and products in cheaper electronic cigarettes. While this is totally unacceptable in a market which is growing, becoming more popular and could play a major role in the future, it will take some time to resolve. There is no point in regulators, governments and electronic cigarette companies fighting amongst each other, while unscrupulous businesses continue to operate on the edge of legality.

Market reputation

When the electronic cigarette market was relatively niche there was little interest from the mass media and any marketing which was carried out never really touched the mass market. Over the last few years we have seen a significant increase in electronic cigarette sales around the world and indeed the US market alone is expected to top $5 billion a year by the end of 2015. What was once a niche market is now a multibillion dollar industry and some experts believe, perhaps a little optimistically, that the number of worldwide electronic cigarette users could top their tobacco cigarette counterparts by 2030!

The reputation of the electronic cigarette market has been impacted somewhat by the introduction of the financial heavyweight tobacco cigarette companies. They are showing the same ruthless nature which brought tobacco cigarettes to the masses, they have the firepower to take market share overnight while still retailing tobacco cigarettes and thereby hedging their bets. Many people are starting to see the tobacco cigarette market and electronic cigarette market as one "wider market" which could not be further from the truth. The traditional electronic cigarette company of today is very much removed from the tobacco cigarette companies of yesteryear.

Regulations

While there is a growing concern that regulators around the world will introduce a strict regulatory structure which could impact short to medium-term growth, there is some hope that perhaps the structure could be a little more "light touch" due to the growing popularity of these products. If regulators had looked to introduce a new structure when this was seen as a niche market then perhaps they would have yielded more power and influence. Instead, with the FDA still unsure about a future regulatory structure after a review lasting more than two years, there is still uncertainty in this particular area. The vast majority of electronic cigarette companies have no issue with a light touch regulatory framework as many believe comparing electronic cigarettes to their tobacco cigarette counterparts is unrealistic and unfair.

Whatever else happens over the next few years we will likely see an array of new regulations, laws and even the introduction of specific electronic cigarette taxes. As long as these are fair, and reflect the current market situation, very few electronic cigarette companies will have any real complaints or concerns going forward.

RE: Electronic cigarette companies in favour of market clean up
Or they could just start smoking cigarettes like I did when I was 12 years old.

What I would like is for them to show some proof that nicotine by itself is more harmful to teens than caffeine which is the world's most widely used psychoactive drug. Come here kids and get your pepsi and coke and sneak a pack a cigs from your old man while you are at it.

So what happens to kids who get hooked on cigs and don't have e-cigs to help THEM go off of the deadly nicotine?

Oh wait we can't have PARENTS actually decide what is right for their kids or who actually try and keep track of what their kids are up to. Heaven forbid that the government would for once stop trying to be the parents. Heaven forbid that the government understand how the real world works. Like the fact that if kids want e-cigs they can get them too no matter what e-cig companies do. Just try and stop them and see what happens. Not to mention that telling kids they can't have them is probably the single best way of making it cool for kids to use them in the first place.

Tell a kid he can't climb on the roof and at least then you will know where to find them.

Fucking nanny state nonsense.

If the natural tendencies of mankind are so bad that it is not safe to permit people to be free, how is it that the tendencies of these organizers are always good? Do not the legislators and their appointed agents also belong to the human race? Or do they believe that they themselves are made of a finer clay than the rest of mankind?
