Debbie
[Image: IMG_20161023_230911_zps3i0matd6.jpg]

The beautiful woman you see in the picture above was named Debbie. She was married to a member here on the forum, phlash. I'm putting together this page to relay to everyone here what he has told me about her, and to quote phlash: "people need to know just how bad smoking can be."

Debbie was born July 5, 1957, and passed away on July 22, 2016. She is survived by a brother, three sons, a step daughter, ten grandchilden with another due Oct. 22 (I haven't spoken with phlash to see if the baby was born yet), and her husband.

Debbie and phlash were married in 1983 and were faithful to each other for 33 years. From the talks that I've had with phlash, as well as a letter he sent me which included the picture above, I can tell they were truly and madly in love with one another. Since I do not know either of them personally, I felt it would be best to put this in phlash's own words, so here is an excerpt from the letter he sent me.

Quote:Deborah was by far the most loving, caring and kindhearted person I ever knew. I will never be able to replace her. She could be kind to even the worst of people, and she loved kids more than anything. When she was able, she worked as a cook most of the time, and even owned a small restaurant from 1990 'til 1996, when she had a severe back injury that left her partly paralyzed in one leg. She was always having health problems, but I won't go into detail here. Her last problem, lung cancer, came on so fast that her body just couldn't take it. Within a month after diagnosis, she went down so fast that even chemo and radiation was not possible. We had to move her to a nursing home, where she lasted only four hours until she finally gave up. But she did get to see nearly all of her kids and grandkids. I think that was all she wanted to do before she left.

I am sure that the Lord took compassion on her and ended her suffering, and I am also sure that God will make an angel of her. She was an angel on Earth, I can't imagine her as anything else. She will never be forgotten.

Of course, we all know that smoking kills. Lung cancer is awful, and some people struggle with it for years. But the real take-away from Debbie's story, at least for me, is not what it does to a smoker, but what it does to the smoker's family. The quote above is just one section of phlash's story, and it hurts to write this because he made me feel like I knew her. After dealing with my grandmother's passing earlier this year, I can all too easily imagine how Debbie's family is feeling right now. This is a memorial for Debbie, but it's also a call to action for those of us who have managed to quit smoking, to help others follow in our footsteps. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths in pretty much every part of the world, and we literally hold the answer in our hands when we vape.

Phlash, we've all said it before, but it bears repeating: all of us here at TVF are here for you. We consider you part of the family, even though we may be separated by hundreds or thousands of miles you are in our hearts and if you need anything, we're here.

Everyone else, now is the time to do your part. Write a letter to your congressman or representative in Parliament, or whatever your equivalent is in whatever country you hail from. Petition local vape shops to host a showing of the new documentary "A Billion Lives." Or just talk to a smoker you know. This kind of tragedy can be avoided, if people just spread the word and show our governments that we deserve the right to vape, the right to make our lives better by switching to a much less harmful alternative.

And keep Debbie's memory alive.

RE: Debbie
Michael, Phlash, this is a beautiful memorial, one I will try to get my husband to read as he still smokes. Phlash, my heart is with you.

RE: Debbie
My Wife, who is still smoking as well, was also born in 1957. Wish I could figure out a way to get her to read this.

I noticed the new "In Loving Memory" section a few hours ago.
Phlash, My Thoughts and Prayers to you and your family in this time of grief...

RE: Debbie
Let me start by saying thank you all so very much for all the kind thoughts, deeds, and prayers you have sent my way, I don't know how I can ever repay you guys,I could not have designed a better group of people than the ones here on TVF.

Michael, you outdid yourself. this is exactly what I wanted, simple yet powerful. It took me an entire day to settle myself down enough to type a reply. It is very hard for me to look at, but I expected that. The only thing I would change is the date of the new baby's arrival, it's November 22, not October 22. Totally my fault. I completely forgot about the running joke in the family that since we are gonna have a new baby that close to Thanksgiving, we won't need to buy a turkey.

A few days ago we got some more bad news, turns out my father in law has been diagnosed with lung cancer, stage two or three I think. He is in bad health already, I don't think he will last much longer. and as bull headed and aggravating as he is, I don't want to see yet another one die from lung cancer. That makes six in my family, all on my wife's side. Cancer is a demon straight from hell, I don't know how much more of it I can take.

Michael, I can't thank you enough, you did what I could not do, and I can never thank you enough, all the words I can think of just fall short. I just hope all the people here on TVF take your advice and let their voices be heard loud and clear. God bless you guys, I love you all.

You keep that great sense of humor, my friend. It will continue to serve you well as you deal with this and the other negatives life throws at you. Good to hear from you.

Thanks for that. Sorry I haven't been around much, been helping a friend rebuild his pro mod dragster the last week or so, getting it ready for next year. It helps take my mind off things, and gives me something to do besides housework. And we all know that baby leg is better than turkey leg if you cook it right.
