Cost of making e juice?
I'm wondering what the initial investment is to begin making your own juices? And, how complicated is it to do? Is it extremely time consuming and is the effort really worth it as compared to just buying your juices at your local shop or ordering them online. Considering trying my hand at it but it seems somewhat overwhelming for a newbie. Any and all comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Oops, think maybe this post should have gone in the Mixology topic.

RE: Cost of making e juice?
You're fine where it is, I think.

I had the same questions, totally from a DIY perspective with no intention of making big batches or selling anything. Personal use only. My initial investment was around $150 I believe. That included 200 syringes, 60 thirty-ml bottles, 6-8 4oz concentrates, and 1 gallon each VG and PG. That is enough to way more than easily make MANY more bottles of DIY than you could buy pre-made for $150. (I have since added a number of more concentrates and some diluted nic, so it added more to the expense). I way overbought, too. I have enough to last me till I'm old and gray. OK, I'm already old, but not gray. You can get by a lot cheaper by buying less.

As for mixing, it is as easy or complicated as you want. Many of the concentrates I have are suitable as-is with only the dilutant added, so that makes it very easy. Example- Caramel Cappuccino, Blueberry, Strawberry, Bubblegum, Red Licorice, etc. All perfectly acceptable with no further tinkering.

And then there are ways to make it complicated by mixing complex recipes. I also measure by volume, not weight, so I did not need a scale. It's got a degree of trial and error, but when you make a bottle at a time, you don't lose much if you make a stinker.

My opinion- totally worth it. Went through two 30ml bottles of homemade strawberries and cream this week that, to me, taste like a vendor could be selling it. And that would have been a cost of $14-$30 or more depending on the source. But since they came out of my DIY stock, it cost pennies. Whoot.

How well does everything keep and for how long? Any special things to know when storing it? Also, how long does it take to whip up a batch and how long after preparation is it ready for use?

RE: Cost of making e juice?
Say you want to make a quick couple of bottles with only one or two flavoring agents, and say you already have the ratios worked out. Wash your hands and your workspace first and you can fill them in 5 minutes. Really, it's not that complicated. Bear in mind that some juices do benefit from steeping, so make more than a few at a time. But, I've found that they are actually acceptable right away most times. If you have an hour of time to spare, you can easily bust out 15-20 30ml bottles without too much trouble. *This does not apply to more complex recipes with precise measuring requirements. Those naturally take longer.

As for mixing them, I used to put them on the end of a jigsaw and rattle the holy hell out of them for 5 minutes, but it seems a simple aggressive hand shaking works fine too.

How long do they keep? Dunno. Have mine in a climate controlled dark area and have had them since September, no issues so far.

RE: Cost of making e juice?
The up-front investment really just depends on how much juice you're wanting to make, and where you buy ingredients.
I'll explain my DIY juice purchases, just for your reference.

I buy my flavorings from Capella's. They're great tasting and not too expensive, and I like buying them all in one place rather than picking and choosing vendors for different flavors. At Capella's, a 13ml bottle of flavoring is around $3.50, while a 4oz (118ml) bottle is about $20. I like to buy big bottles of flavoring for recipes that I already know I like, and small bottles for testing flavors.

I've started buying PG and VG from Bulk Apothecary. I can get 10lb of VG for about $15 and 8lb of PG for about $20. That's more than enough for a year or two.
I buy my nicotine from NicVape. If I recall correctly, a 500ml bottle was around $50. That's more nicotine than I'll probably ever use.

So for me, the cost was $50 for the nicotine, $35 for PG/VG, and another $80 or so for flavors, bringing the total to $165. That's enough ingredients to make juice to last at least six months, as a very conservative guess. More likely it'll last me around a year.

If you don't buy it in that big of a bulk, you can start off much cheaper. At NicVape you can get a small bottle of nicotine for around $20, and you can get small bottles of PG/VG from Capella's for $3 each. So let's say you get three 13ml flavoring bottles, one bottle each of PG and VG, and a small bottle of nicotine, that'd be around $25-30.

Almost forgot, you'd also need empty bottles to put your juice in, and some syringes to measure the ingredients. Syringes are around $2 each on average, and you'll want several. Empty bottles are around 50¢ each. So if you add five syringes and twenty empty juice bottles, that would bring the total to around $50.

I think that's everything you'd need, I'm doing this off the top of my head but it gives you a ballpark estimate. You can also buy a DIY starter kit from some vendors, I know the one from Totally Wicked is good, that way you get everything you need in one place.

It's all good. Multiple opinions are always good. And in this case quite similar.

RE: Cost of making e juice?
As an addendum, you might already have some supplies for mixing that you're unaware of. You can use medicine droppers instead of syringes if you don't mind cleaning them. You can use a Pyrex measuring cup to mix juice in if you're making more than one bottle at a time. I recently mixed half a liter of juice using a 4-cup measuring cup, then just stirred it for a few minutes with a spoon. In retrospect, it probably would have been easier to mix with a whisk, but I didn't think that through at the time. Then I just used a funnel to get the juice into bottles. Got half a liter of a rather complex recipe mixed in like ten minutes, then filled the bottles while I watched an episode of Friends.

RE: Cost of making e juice?
And of that $150 investment, I used up all 60 of the 30ml bottles already. Basing that on say $6.99 a bottle retail, those 60 bottles from a vendor would have cost $420, plus shipping, etc. And I have an absolute ton of stuff left (except bottles, ha). I can make a thousand bucks worth or juice for 10% of the cost, so for me, no brainer.
