RE: Chat hub
Woke up every hour last night, had a dream I had a stroke in bed and could not wake hubby, it was terrible, I looked over at him but could not move or speak, I remember him looking back at me with a puzzled look on his face Then was jolted awake when I was on a stretcher and they were putting an oxygen mask over my face. It was awful.

RE: Chat hub
I hate the dreams that feel so real, everything in life is perfect, then you wake up and slowly realize it was a dream.
That and the dreams that I am smoking. Those ones are so real feeling some mornings I think I had actually smoked a cig

RE: Chat hub
Not as much a nightmare as a (multiple expletives deleted) nightmare. I have a seriously borked laptop to sort. With a ton and a half of malware in it. So pull out the hard drive and scan it for crapware. Find plenty. but the NTFS driver is read only so can't kill it. so - fire up a virtual machine, update its defences and then let it have at the borked drive.

'Kin thing won't speak to the network.

Fix the settings. Reboot the VM twenty times as Windows (XP Home in this case - its networking stack was a work of Satan) knows better than you what its network settings ought to be ('kin broken) so it sets them back to broken till reboot 21 when it gets the idea that you actually might know what you want it do do and broken is not an option.

But the VM networking layer appears to be broken. I could install another hypervisor and use that instead. Then reinstall the Windows bloody VM. Then reboot it 40 times till it is patched to "usefulness". Then fix the infected drive after another 50 reboots of the VM and on a bad day the host box.

Bugger it - I'm going to bed.

I'm beginning to suspect that the device needs maintenance of the percussive kind. A 20kg sledgehammer would be favourite just now. Or an axe. Or a chainsaw. If I could get the bugger to start.

RE: Chat hub
The people who produce that malware and spyware crap need to be hung up by their gonads while someone jams little spiky things under their toenails.

I have gotten to where I simply don't bother running any kind of firewall or anti-virus at all. I just back up ever day and then do a complete re-instal about once a month. Keeps my old system running super fast that way. Of course then I still have to deal with keeping the other three computers in my house going along with four tablets and a few android gaming devices. My old computer is an XP and I swear that doing the re-instals I have the best running machine in the house.

If the natural tendencies of mankind are so bad that it is not safe to permit people to be free, how is it that the tendencies of these organizers are always good? Do not the legislators and their appointed agents also belong to the human race? Or do they believe that they themselves are made of a finer clay than the rest of mankind?

RE: Chat hub
There's a lot to be said for running an image of a good install and reimaging daily. Not that any of my punters would go for that. Or me. My work box has that happen every day but because of the corporate crap (The NHS is one of the very few employers in the world with more than a million employees. I think it is #3 in the world) it takes 20 minutes from power on till I can read my mail. And it has no local storage and boots off the network. Which is fine if it weren't for the other 9,999 people doing the same thing at the same time. On a server that might work for 100 people.

Wow over a million people, that is something else. I can only imagine the bureaucracy involved with a place like that. It's amazing they ever get anything done.

RE: Chat hub
It can get heavily bureaucratic but nobody is quite sure where we fit in the scheme of things so we pretty much get left to our own devices. Our local managers are fine and helpful - they get paid to deal with bureaucrap. And they do Smile

Oh and good morning since there are still four minutes left of the morning here.
