RE: Chat hub
Officiator - I'm a hospital chaplain. I used to have to do a funeral a week, but as long-term care has been privatised by the NHS we no longer have many deaths in the hospital. When I started nearly 30 years ago there were 2000 patients in 3 hospitals in the area. Something like 600 of those had been admitted before I was born. Globally, psychiatric hospital populations peaked in 1961. Which is after I was born, if not by much.

Since the advent of neuroleptic (antipsychotic) drugs around 1958 there is not now an expectation that people will spend the rest of their lives in hospital. So a very large group of patients (I buried hundreds of them) no longer exists. Two of the three hospitals have now closed and there are less than 300 beds in the remaining hospital.

Dementia care in Scotland used to be done by the NHS, but in order to harmonise with "best practice" (Spelt with the currency unit of your choice in front of it) in England where there was a tradition of nursing homes (Often known as "granny farms") which there was not in Scotland, my institution closed about 400 dementia beds on the one remaining site.

I did two funerals last year so three in one week is unusual.

RE: Chat hub
Well it's good that you haven't had to do many recently. Sorry to hear you've had so many all at once.

It is great that the mentality has changed so people don't have to spend their entire lives in the hospital after being committed. Though I'm sure there's corruption in that area same as anywhere else. Sad

RE: Chat hub
Not so much here - it costs too much.

Our cheapest bed is well past $1200 per week. At one high security unit I know of it works out at $1500 per patient per night.

There is a lot of pressure on not nearly enough beds. Though this will get worse - Gloucestershire has less than a quarter of the acute beds my area does for the same population which means in practice that urgent psychiatric care there is being done in police cells.

Another subject change, this time to lighten it up a bit rather than tone down the 2nd grade theme...

I think I may have been vaping too long. It's such a habit now, that I had picked up the remote to change the channel last night, but absentmindedly powered off the system when I hit the main button in an attempt to vape it! Yeah, my wife had a good laugh with that one. That's OK; she has vaped her smartphone more than once.

So, everyone, what else have you accidentally 'vaped'? If I get a bunch of "never done that" answers, I am amongst a pack of liars!!!

Never vaped a remote Big Grin

Have vaped the odd torch (flashlight)

And have forgotten how many times I've failed to put a dripper top cap back on. The burnt lips and tongue are a hint that paying more attention might have been a good idea.

Yikes!!! Never left the cap off yet, I bet that is something you do but once. And no offense for changing the subject, Don, but having a close family member with severe psychotic issues, it's a subject I tend to steer elsewhere when possible. I will say, however, that modern medicine is at times a godsend.

RE: Chat hub
I've vaped the remote before. Also a voice recorder that I use to take notes while I'm driving. I've also tried to vape a beer bottle, and worst was when I ducked on a bottle of juice that I'd just used to drip. That was bad.
