On again, off again. Mostly on today, but definitely off the next couple. Although I'm always a little off according to the missus.

RE: Chat hub
Anyone know what algorithm(s) Facebook uses to suggest friends in the “People You May Know” feed? I very intentionally do NOT befriend co-workers on Facebook, but since re-activating my account a few weeks ago after a 1 year hiatus, Facebook routinely suggests not random others of the thousands of employees within my company, but people I work with directly, immediate co-workers. We don’t have any “mutual friends,” so I have no idea how Facebook would determine that I might know them. It’s a bit unsettling…

They follow you around and photograph everyone you are seen speaking to. Then they run the photos against facial recognition software, and if they get a hit with a current FB user, a friendship suggestion is generated. Simple but effective. I believe that a smiling countenance noted in said photographs adds a heart tag to the suggestion.

I KNEW it! Sly bastards!!

On a serious note, however (and I know how conspiratorial this sounds,) but I thought perhaps our cell phones might exchange high-level aggregate data in passing to determine who’s around who most often which then feeds up into Facebook essentially suggestion that the 10 people I most often pass by every should be “friends.”

RE: Chat hub
They troll through all the vape forums and pick out names of regular users then they go to the CIA to get them to hack into the user names then they go to the FBI to get the email addresses then they pass this information on to Scotland Yard in the UK for them to do the same for here. They then go to areas and pick out the vapers that are in the same vacinity and email them all in turn. It is all really quite straightforward.

RE: Chat hub
Ugh, damn it; I just did some high-level research and found out how they do it. Frankly, it’s disgusting, but entirely my fault (see South Park episode “Human Cent-iPad” and ALWAYS read the Terms and Conditions!) If you use the Facebook mobile app, you have to “accept” that the app will access myriad data points from your phone, including Contact Lists. Rewind to 2 years ago when I had the great (read: WORST) idea to link my work email to my personal phone, and ALL of my Outlook contacts flooded my Android Contact List and are still there even after I severed the link to my work email. Facebook sees those people’s names/emails and offers them up as “People You May Know” when it should really be “People We Know You Know Because We Looked Through Your Shit.”
