Morning Don - I take it the dogs like the snow - more than a couple of mm. though[Image: smile.gif].
Yeah - they're OK up to about half a metre of it.

I'm not. Just not a fan of the white crap at all.

My dog sinks in 2mm of snow - she hates snow. Short hair chi does not do rain, sleet or snow. Good thing she is litter trained well.

But it can get pretty cold there at least by UK standards. I've been there when it was below -20C which was fun even if it did mean melting snow for water.
So american here...-20 celcius (sp) translates over to -4 F. That's to the point of your pipes freezing over and needing to melt snow for a water supply in the UK? Really? Just googled it, and it looks like the UK has never seen anything worse than -6 F. That is a cake walk compared to Northwest Indianas last 2 winters. At its coldest with windchill slapping us full force, this past January we saw temps as low as around -30 F. And yet my pipes were still fully functional for running water...hmmm...guarantee you would freeze out here if -6 is "record lows" for UK. (no offense intended, just didnt know i could handle the cold as well as it turns out...)

trying to convince my cats that out side season is over . the elder cat ( 20+ years ) is like , fine i'm going back to bed then . the yonger (2 1/2 years) how ever is quite livid , and has kuffed and bitten me repeatedly . she spends more time out than in.

Dogs have owners , Cats have staff .

It's a matter of building for the expected conditions. One of the nice things about living on an island is the much more moderate climate.

The water was an afterthought, added about 50 years ago. Before that it was a hand pump and an outhouse.

We've never seen in Scotland temperatures above 30.1C (86F) either. If it were continually inhabited (and therefore heated) there would be no problem till the power went out. For insurance reasons the water system has to be drained October-April unless the place is occupied full-time.

Which is pretty uncommon here, I've had less than half an hour of power outages since January 1990. Twenty-five minutes of that were when someone got careless with a JCB (backhoe).

RE: Chat hub
Good Morning all - no low temperatures here but it is still raining and not much light - the traffic is still on headlights - I hate the winter unless it is really cold and frosty - at least then you get some decent daylight - for a while.
