Howdy Whiskey!

Hey guys what is a a "motorway" is that the equivalent of our "expressway" Multiple lanes on each side. Or is that a "highway" Two lanes only?

If the natural tendencies of mankind are so bad that it is not safe to permit people to be free, how is it that the tendencies of these organizers are always good? Do not the legislators and their appointed agents also belong to the human race? Or do they believe that they themselves are made of a finer clay than the rest of mankind?

RE: Chat hub
Freeway I think would be the equivalent, or expressway. Speed limit 70mph, no learner drivers, horses or cyclists allowed. Usually with more lanes than other roads.

Our classifications would be single carriageway(Highway), dual carriageway(2-3 lanes each way almost always with a central divider), motorway(2-about 12 lanes each way Most have 3 at least the ones within 5 hours driving from here. Exits only from the left (This would be the right in the US). Except for a couple of junctions in central Glasgow).

At one point in the 70's all three had different speed limits, 50mph on a single carriageway, 60 on a dual carriageway and 70 on a motorway. Now it's 60 on the first and 70 on the second two with differences for trucks and buses. Motorways are centrally funded (Federal in the US) as are some other roads. The rest are locally funded except when they aren't. In general A class roads will have some central funding especially the ones with T after their number.

B class roads are locally funded but some of them in and around towns may have more than one lane in each direction, often without a central divider. In more remote areas in the far north a few A roads have only one lane for both directions with bulges for vehicles to get past each other. A lot of foreign motorcyclists manage to embed themselves on farm machinery moving at 5% of their speed on these roads.

Our road categories have about as much to do with funding as anything else, but motorways are our fastest roads (Except the M25 round London which has been described as 140 miles of car parking) and are always centrally funded.

I've confused myself writing this so hopefully someone else will chime in Smile

LOL Bob Big Grin

Motorway is a 3 or 4 lane highway

This is our busiest (on a very quiet day), it runs the full circumference of London

Tongue

I think it was Sweden that changed from driving on the left to driving on the wrong side of the road. That changeover must have been interesting...

It certainly caused me issues when trying to cross the road in Pittsburgh as I kept looking the wrong way. My survival strategy was to find an American (Not hard in Pittsburgh) and follow them across the road.

My mom and her family are from a suburb outside Pittsburgh.

Just glad you didn'pick up one of those fancy looking women from the side of the road to help you out... Might have found yourself in quite the pickle!

RE: Chat hub
It's clear there have been a lot of Scots in Pittsburgh from the way they speak. I'd have more problems being understood in some English cities. But there are some words that have radically different meanings. Like when I went out for a smoke and said "I'm going out for a fag". That got me a lot of very strange looks Smile
